Sydney Knowledge Hub

The Sydney Knowledge Hub (SKH) is a dynamic coworking space and community situated within the University of Sydney, specifically designed to foster innovation and accelerate the commercialisation of research. It serves as a crucial nexus, connecting researcher-led startups and industry partners, facilitating their journey from invention to real-world impact through shared spaces, targeted events, and bespoke support. Since its establishment, the SKH has cultivated an environment where collaboration sparks new perspectives and serendipitous relationships can flourish, leveraging the immense intellectual capital of the university.

Launched in a pilot phase in October 2019, the Sydney Knowledge Hub quickly evolved from its early development period to become a recognised platform for research translation by 2023. This rapid growth underscores its effectiveness in bridging the gap between academic discovery and market application. The Hub's unique proposition lies in its direct adjacency to a world-class research institution, granting members unparalleled access to the University of Sydney’s extensive research ecosystem, including expert researchers, talented students, and state-of-the-art facilities and prototyping spaces.

SKH caters to a diverse membership, encompassing researcher-led ventures, established industry partners seeking deeper university collaborations, non-profits, and corporate teams. It is notably industry-agnostic, with members operating across various sectors such as agtech, artificial intelligence, biotech, medtech, and quantum technologies, all united by a foundation in research. The Hub distinguishes itself through tailored programs like the PERIscope Commercialisation Award, SPARK Sydney, and the Inventor Mentoring Program, which provide essential capacity building, networking, and intellectual property support.

Under the leadership of Director Imche Veiga, the Sydney Knowledge Hub has achieved significant milestones, notably contributing to a 35% increase in records of invention across the University in 2023 compared to the previous year. In the same year, over 40 researchers actively participated in its cohort-based programs, and 29 organisations chose the Hub as their primary operational base. These achievements highlight the Hub's role in cultivating a thriving research commercialisation ecosystem and supporting a growing number of innovative companies to scale their impactful work.
