THE BACKSTORY
I wasn't supposed to
end up here.
Born in Poland. Grew up in Austria. The kind of upbringing where the path was clear: get the grades, get the degree, get the job.
So I did. BSc First Class Honours from Aston University in the UK. MSc from the Vienna University of Economics and the Stockholm School of Economics. Then the corporate circuit - American Express in London, PwC, KPMG consulting.
I speak five languages - English, German, and Polish natively, plus French and enough Latin and Russian to get by in a library or a train station. I was built for the corporate world. On paper, everything was going to plan.
But something was off.
I was surrounded by brilliant people doing work that didn't make their eyes light up. The meetings were long. The decisions were slow. The distance between having an idea and actually doing something about it felt enormous.
I realised I wasn't built for bureaucracy. I was built for building.
THE SPARK
Found my first startup
through a Facebook post.
A mate shared a post: a pet-sitting marketplace called Mad Paws was looking for their first hire. No job description. No process. Just a founder with a vision and a lot of energy.
I said yes before I'd really thought it through. Grew their Instagram from 400 to 4,000 followers in six weeks. Learned more about business in that first month than in two years of consulting.
I was hooked. The speed, the chaos, the feeling of building something from nothing - I knew I'd never go back to corporate.
From there I joined Expert360, a talent marketplace. Came in when it was 7 people. Left when it was 60. Helped raise a $14M Series B along the way. That was the real education - watching a startup scale, seeing what breaks, and learning how to fix it whilst everything's on fire.
THE DRIFT
Feeling lost.
I'd left the corporate world behind. I'd tasted what startups could be. But after Expert360, I found myself in that uncomfortable place where the last chapter is over and the next one hasn't started yet.
I didn't know what was next. I just knew it had to matter.
I spent weeks talking to founders, investors, operators - anyone who'd meet me for coffee. Not pitching anything. Just listening. Trying to figure out where I could do the most good.
“I didn't have a five-year plan. I had a vague feeling that there was something bigger out there - something where all the random pieces of my background would actually make sense together.”
That's when I found Startmate.
THE CHAPTER
Re-founding Startmate.
I joined Startmate as Head of Operations in 2018. It was small, scrappy, and had enormous potential. By 2019 I was CEO.
Over the next eight years, we turned it into something genuinely different. Not just an accelerator - an entire ecosystem. The numbers tell part of the story, but they don't capture the thousands of conversations, the late nights, the moments of doubt, or the founders who went from zero to something extraordinary.
“Batko literally re-founded Startmate, and Australia thanks him for it.”
Niki Scevak
Startmate Founder & Blackbird Co-CEO
The Fellowship programmes alone put more than 1,000 women into the startup ecosystem. Forty-two per cent of the companies we backed were women-founded. Not because of quotas - because we changed who we went looking for.
I stepped down in December 2025.
THE SIDE QUESTS
Building on the side.
While running Startmate, I couldn't stop building. Evenings. Weekends. Early mornings. If an idea grabbed me, I had to see it through.

The cost of leadership.
Eight years is a long time to lead anything.
I never thought I'd stay anywhere this long. But Startmate had this gravitational pull - the founders, the community, the feeling that what we were building actually mattered.
There's a weight to being the person everyone looks to for answers. The one who holds the vision when others waver. The one who makes the call when the call is hard. You carry it everywhere - at dinner, on runs, at 2am when your mind won't switch off.
But alongside the weight, there's a privilege most people never get. You see someone go from a half-formed idea on a napkin to a company worth hundreds of millions. You watch people grow into leaders they never imagined they could be. You get to say “I was there at the start” - and mean it.
“Eight years is a long time to lead anything. I never thought I'd stay anywhere this long.”
- On stepping down, December 2025
The decision to step down was the hardest I've ever made. Not because I was tired - but because I knew I still had a long career ahead of me and a couple more chapters to try.
NOW
What I do now.
I work deep, one-on-one, with a very small number of founders, executives, and senior leaders.
Strategy - where are you going and why.
Operations - how the machine runs without you being the answer to every question.
Personal operating system - how you work, think, and make decisions every day.
Very few engagements. Deep, not wide. If you want surface-level, there are a thousand people for that. If you want someone in the trenches - I'm here.
Ready to work together?
Currently coaching 4 founders. Taking on 1 more this quarter.
