Stone & Chalk - Sydney Startups

Stone & Chalk is Australia's largest not-for-profit innovation community, dedicated to transforming the nation into a sustainable, technology-driven economy. Established in Sydney in 2015 as a fintech co-working hub, its initial mission was to foster and accelerate the development of world-leading fintech startups. Over time, Stone & Chalk expanded its focus beyond financial technology to encompass a broad spectrum of emerging critical technologies, including cyber security, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space technology, healthtech, and climate tech. This expansion was notably solidified by its merger with AustCyber in 2021, with full integration completed by July 2024, significantly bolstering its capabilities in the cyber security sector.

The organisation serves a diverse ecosystem of startups, scaleups, corporates, and government entities, providing them with the essential tools and support to accelerate growth and create real impact. Stone & Chalk offers modern co-working spaces across three major Australian cities: Sydney (at Tech Central), Melbourne, and Adelaide, providing a dynamic environment where innovators can connect, collaborate, and thrive.

What sets Stone & Chalk apart is its purpose-driven, not-for-profit model, which prioritises the success of its founders. The name itself, derived from the saying "Some things are set in stone, the rest is written in chalk," reflects its adaptive approach to innovation, recognising that while foundations are firm, the future is always open to influence and change. They provide a comprehensive suite of services, including access to a curated network of investors, mentors, and customers, tailored growth programs, and opportunities for corporate and government partnerships.

Under the leadership of Group CEO Chris Kirk and Group Board Chair Leona Murphy, Stone & Chalk has achieved significant milestones. Since its inception, startups and scaleups within its ecosystem have collectively raised over $3.9 billion in capital. The community boasts over 6,000 residents across more than 500 startups and scaleups, with over 100,000 jobs created through its initiatives. In 2024, over 60% of companies reported significant growth, demonstrating the effectiveness of their support. Notable achievements include resident companies securing substantial funding, developing innovative products, and expanding into new markets.
