What Founders Think of CoLabs (1)
If you're building a biotech in Australia and you havn't met the team at CoLabs you're doing it wrong. Co working spaces, co working lab spaces, knowledge coming out the whazoo on how to set up your own lab (services to help you build your own lab) contacts in all of the biotech space and what would seem like unlimited amount of time to help founders succeed.
The team at colabs have done everything from finding me a second hand incubator and getting it across state lines for me right through to being a sounding board for complex internal issues to help connect to investors, customers and more.
They've got spaces across Melbourne and are soon opening their first in Sydney. Get around it.
About CoLabs
CoLabs is a pioneering coworking space based in Melbourne, Australia, specifically designed to foster innovation within the biotechnology, deep technology, climate technology, and impact-oriented startup sectors. They provide crucial infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratory, engineering, and office spaces, aiming to bridge the gap in affordable, specialised facilities for early-stage companies and researchers. CoLabs operates from three facilities in Brunswick and an advanced transdisciplinary innovation hub in Notting Hill, with strategic plans for expansion into Sydney and Brisbane in the coming year. Their offerings extend beyond physical space to include essential equipment, waste management services, and valuable support in research and development, equipment sourcing, and crucial connections to investors and academic partners.
Born from a profound awareness of the ecological impacts stemming from traditional economic models and competitive business practices, particularly in the wake of the 2019 bushfires and 2020 COVID lockdowns, CoLabs emerged with a mission to redefine how we innovate. The founders envisioned an opportunity to cultivate positive change by reimagining collaboration and value creation through science and technology. This led to their foundational commitment to supporting impact-driven research and development, complemented by educational programs focused on STEM capabilities, critical thinking, and eco-literacy, all underpinned by an unwavering commitment to their 'business unusual' principles.
What sets CoLabs apart is its dedication to a circular, bio-based, and regenerative economy, acting as a social enterprise that actively supports planet-positive initiatives. They are not just providing space; they are cultivating a vibrant, transdisciplinary community where diverse innovators, entrepreneurs, students, and not-for-profit organisations can thrive. Key achievements include being nominated for the Inner North Business Awards in 2025 and notably diverting over two tonnes of science equipment from landfill, showcasing their commitment to sustainability. CoLabs offers a unique 'Impact Program', providing free lab and office space, alongside structured incubation for early-stage startups tackling human and planetary challenges.
The leadership team includes Co-Founders Samuel Wines and Andrew Gray, supported by Jan Bjelic as the Strategy and Operations Lead and Hilary McKie as the Lab and Operations Coordinator. Under their guidance, CoLabs has garnered a reputation for making significant strides in supporting a wide array of biotech and deep tech ventures, facilitating their journey from conceptualisation to real-world impact. Their model, emphasising shared resources and collaborative ecosystems, is crucial for accelerating science-led innovation in Australia's burgeoning bioeconomy.
