My experience applying to Robin Hood Ventures was ultimately informative, but it also highlighted how differently firms can define “early-stage.”

Based on their website and positioning, I initially believed they were more open to very early-stage startups. However, the rejection email clarified that they typically look for companies with proof of concept, beta users, testimonials, revenue, or measurable traction.

That distinction would have been helpful to understand before applying, because their actual investment criteria appeared later-stage than I originally interpreted from the website messaging.

That said, I appreciated that the rejection itself was transparent and constructive. They clearly explained their reasoning and even shared founder resources and partner programs for companies still in earlier validation phases.

For founders considering applying: I’d recommend making sure you already have meaningful traction or market validation before entering their pipeline.
