Write a ReviewAbout CRV
CRV, originally known as Charles River Ventures, is a venerable venture capital firm with a rich history spanning over five decades. Established in 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts, to commercialise research emerging from MIT, the firm later expanded its presence by opening a Silicon Valley office in the early 2000s and rebranded to CRV with its 16th fund. The firm has consistently focused on early-stage technology investments, playing a pivotal role in the genesis and growth of numerous groundbreaking companies.
CRV's core mission revolves around empowering exceptional founders at the earliest stages of their entrepreneurial journey, often before product-market fit has been definitively proven. They distinguish themselves through a 'lead, don't follow' philosophy, aiming to be the initial term sheet provider and actively leading investment rounds rather than waiting for others to establish social proof. This conviction-based approach is underpinned by a remarkable 24-hour decision-making capability, where any partner can commit the firm independently without requiring investment committee approval, significantly accelerating the fundraising process for founders.
The firm serves a diverse cohort of founders, particularly technical entrepreneurs building companies across sectors such as enterprise software, consumer applications, developer tools, AI/ML, healthcare technology, deep-insight bioengineering, and cybersecurity. Over its long history, CRV has made over 947 investments, funding more than 750 startups, with 80 of these successfully going public. Notable portfolio companies include industry giants like DoorDash, Twitter, Zendesk, HubSpot, Patreon, Airtable, Mercury, and Vercel.
In a strategic move to sharpen its focus on early-stage opportunities and protect returns, CRV returned $275 million USD of unallocated capital from a prior $500 million USD late-stage Select fund to its limited partners in 2024. Their latest flagship fund, CRV XX, closed at $750 million USD ($1.125 billion AUD) in August 2025, exclusively dedicated to seed and Series A investments. This deliberate strategy underscores their commitment to disciplined investing and deep, lasting partnerships with founders, providing hands-on support and leveraging an extensive network to accelerate growth. The firm currently manages approximately $6.2 billion USD ($9.3 billion AUD) in assets.
CRV is led by a seasoned team of general partners, including prominent investors like Saar Gur, George Zachary, Brittany Walker, and Jon Auerbach, all of whom bring significant operational and investing experience. The firm maintains offices in Palo Alto and San Francisco, California, fostering a human-centric culture dedicated to improving the human experience through technology and entrepreneurship.
