My experience with Baobab Ventures reinforced how important investor thesis alignment really is.

The feedback I received was that the company was interesting, but not aligned with their current investment focus. After researching their portfolio and positioning more closely, it became clear that Baobab leans heavily toward frontier AI, robotics, infrastructure, and deep-tech companies led by highly technical teams.

One of the biggest lessons from the process was realizing that “AI investor” can mean very different things depending on the firm’s thesis and portfolio strategy.

For founders applying to specialized funds, my advice is to look beyond the website headlines and study what types of companies they consistently back before applying.
