Write a ReviewAbout Venturetec (acquired by McKinsey & Company)
Venturetec, an Australian-based entity operating from Melbourne, was a boutique consultancy renowned for its expertise in digital innovation and venture building before its acquisition by McKinsey & Company. The firm specialised in designing and constructing highly scalable, secure cloud-automation systems, as well as developing web and mobile applications. Beyond technical implementation, Venturetec offered cloud, integration, and software technology advisory services, assisting clients in navigating complex digital transformations. The company was particularly active in the tech startup sector, providing crucial technical, financial, and advisory support to emerging projects, especially those that faced challenges in timely and cost-effective deployment.
Founded by Jonathan Wolinsky, who served as its CEO and Lead Engineer, Venturetec positioned itself as a team of 'critical thinker/programming rock stars' focused on delivering robust solutions. Its services encompassed areas like service design, lean startup methodologies for enterprise, user experience (UX), and UX research, aligning with its role as a startup accelerator and innovator. The firm gained a reputation for its ability to 'fix up' failed technical projects, often transitioning into an outsourced systems design and engineering partner for these clients. This hands-on approach ensured that significant value was added even before a single line of code was written, by thoroughly understanding and guiding business strategies.
In early 2021, Venturetec marked a significant milestone when it was acquired by global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. This acquisition was a strategic move by McKinsey to bolster its digital delivery capabilities in Australia, and it represented one of the firm's first acquisitions in the region. Following the acquisition, a team of five consultants and innovators from Venturetec, led at the time by managing partner Trey Zagante, was integrated into McKinsey Digital's Leap practice. The Leap practice is dedicated to helping clients with the incubation, launch, and building of new digital businesses, a perfect fit for Venturetec's venture building and innovation specialisation. Over its operational period, Venturetec successfully completed more than 80 projects with clients across seven countries within the Asia Pacific region, demonstrating its considerable reach and impact. The integration expanded McKinsey's capacity to serve clients across sectors including banking and financial services, government, health, telecommunications, media, and technology.
