About Venture Catalyst Space Accelerator

The Venture Catalyst Space Accelerator, based in Adelaide, Australia, is a pioneering acceleration program specifically designed to nurture and propel early-stage startups within the rapidly evolving international space sector. Launched in 2018, it is delivered by the University of South Australia's (UniSA) Innovation & Collaboration Centre (ICC) and significantly supported by the South Australian Government's Space Innovation Fund, marking it as the state's first dedicated space industry accelerator. The program aims to foster innovative and disruptive businesses that develop new products and services for space-enabled applications, serving a diverse cohort of founders from both local and international backgrounds.

Since its inception, Venture Catalyst Space has supported over 40 space startups, guiding them through crucial stages from ideation to market entry and commercialisation. A key differentiator of the program is its equity-free funding, offering eligible startups an AUD $10,000 stipend and allowing them to retain all intellectual property. This approach empowers founders to focus on development without immediate dilution of ownership. Participants benefit from tailored workshops, one-on-one mentoring, and unparalleled access to UniSA's extensive resources, including a custom-built co-working space in Adelaide CBD, research facilities, and legal and tax clinics.

The accelerator distinguishes itself through its robust network, connecting founders with a global pool of industry experts and stakeholders from prominent organisations such as NASA, the Australian Space Agency, Defence SA, Airbus, and the SmartSat Collaborative Research Centre. This network provides specialised advice on product development, IP commercialisation, digital strategy, and more, accelerating the startups' journey to become investment-ready and globally scalable. The program boasts significant achievements, with alumni collectively raising over $54.7 million in additional investments and grants, creating more than 220 new jobs, and contributing an estimated economic impact of nearly $36 million to the South Australian economy.

Leadership within the program has seen key figures like Jasmine Vreugdenburg, who launched Venture Catalyst Space in 2018, and Craig Jones, UniSA's Deputy Director of Business Incubation, driving its success. Graduates of the program are also eligible to apply for a fully-funded place in the Australian Centre for Business Growth's 'Growth Ramp' scale-up program, providing a clear pathway for continued business expansion and refinement. This comprehensive support system underscores Adelaide's growing reputation as Australia's space capital, fostering a thriving ecosystem for space ventures.
