Write a ReviewAbout National Energy Transition Accelerator (NETA)
The National Energy Transition Accelerator (NETA) is a key Australian initiative dedicated to fostering innovation and commercialisation within the nation's vital resources technology and critical minerals sectors. Established under the umbrella of the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer, NETA plays a pivotal role in accelerating Australia's shift towards a cleaner energy future. The accelerator specifically targets Australian researchers and early-stage startup founders who are developing deep technical innovations with significant commercial potential in these crucial fields.
NETA's core mission involves guiding these nascent ventures from the laboratory to market readiness. It provides a structured program designed to make startups industry-connected, investment-ready, and commercially deployable. The accelerator addresses a critical capability gap by equipping innovators with the business acumen and strategic connections needed to transform their technical breakthroughs into thriving enterprises. By doing so, NETA contributes to building Australia's advanced manufacturing capabilities and driving impactful commercialisation outcomes.
The program distinguishes itself through its intensive, focused approach. For the 2025 cohort, NETA offers a seven-week intensive program, which previously ran for three months. Participants benefit from a $10,000 equity-free grant, providing essential seed funding without diluting ownership. Beyond financial support, NETA offers access to an extensive network of Australian resources and energy industry leaders, investors, and expert mentorship, fostering a vibrant ecosystem for growth. The initiative is led by Curtin University, in partnership with The University of Queensland and James Cook University, and is supported by the Australian Government Department of Education's Trailblazer Universities Program.
Key achievements include the selection and support of its 2025 cohort, comprising eight research teams from Western Australia and Victoria. These teams are working on diverse solutions, from advanced battery technologies to sustainable biomining. The program culminates in an Industry Demo Night, where innovators showcase their clean energy solutions to a broader audience. Leadership and support for the accelerator come from figures such as Curtin University's Manager of Entrepreneurship Programs Ben Sandhu and Investor in Residence Matt MacFarlane, with overall guidance from Trailblazer Director Rohan McDougall, who highlights the program's role in fostering a commercial mindset among academics.
