The I2N (Integrated Innovation Network) is the dynamic entrepreneurship and venture development unit of the University of Newcastle, Australia, dedicated to empowering innovators and fostering the growth of successful ventures. Established in 2016, I2N acts as a crucial bridge, connecting aspiring and established entrepreneurs with a supportive community, expert mentors, potential customers, and vital funding. They offer a comprehensive suite of programs, including Pre-Accelerator and Accelerator initiatives, specialised programs for researchers, and unique university courses designed to instil essential business skills.
I2N serves a broad spectrum of individuals, from students and researchers translating their discoveries into commercial outcomes, to startup founders and small business owners seeking to scale their impact. Notably, I2N has a strong commitment to supporting women founders, launching programs like FLIP to address the unique challenges faced by women in the entrepreneurial landscape. The network operates primarily within Australia's Hunter and Central Coast regions, extending its reach across New South Wales to drive regional economic diversification and job creation.
What sets I2N apart is its dedication to bringing world-class innovation support to regional Australia, challenging the notion that founders must relocate to major metropolitan centres to access high-quality acceleration. This regional focus has been a key differentiator, contributing to their recognition as the most recommended startup accelerator in Australia by Startup Muster, the nation's largest survey of the startup ecosystem. Their approach cultivates a vibrant, networked ecosystem built on genuine collaboration and accessible mentorship.
Since its inception, I2N has demonstrated significant impact, with key achievements including the acceleration and incubation of 188 teams. These ventures have collectively raised over $62.7 million in capital, creating 280 jobs and contributing $44.1 million in wages to the regional economy. In addition to these tangible outcomes, I2N was recognised in 2024 with the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Activators of the Year award at the Asia Pacific Triple E Awards, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in the innovation space. The leadership team includes University Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, with Siobhan Curran as the Acting Director of Knowledge Exchange and Entrepreneurship, guiding the network's strategic direction and operational success.
