About I2N Accelerator (Healthtech)
The I2N Accelerator (Healthtech) is a specialised program offered by the University of Newcastle's Integrated Innovation Network (I2N), located in the Lower Hunter and Central Coast regions of Australia. Established in 2016, I2N has become a pivotal force in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within regional Australia, and in 2025, it expanded its accelerator offerings to include a dedicated Healthtech stream. This program is designed to support tech-enabled entrepreneurs who are developing innovative healthcare solutions to address pressing medical and wellbeing challenges. It serves founders from the pre-startup to early-stage, pre-Series A funding stages, who are headquartered in the Hunter or Central Coast regions, regardless of their affiliation with the University of Newcastle.
What sets the I2N Accelerator apart is its robust support system and a commitment to nurturing local talent. It has consistently been recognised as the most recommended regional Accelerator program in Australia by Startup Muster in both 2024 and 2025, reflecting its strong community and impactful programs. Participants benefit from a vibrant community of founders, experts, mentors, and investors, along with deep expertise from carefully selected program mentors and Entrepreneurs in Residence who guide them in becoming capable venture builders and problem solvers. A key differentiator is that the University of Newcastle generally makes no claim over the intellectual property generated by participants, provided its development acknowledges the Accelerator program (subject to the University's IP Policy for employees or students).
The program offers a comprehensive 13-week curriculum, running annually from August to November, featuring hands-on learning, expert workshops, weekly coaching, and dedicated industry mentoring. It culminates in an investor pitch night and Demo Night, providing founders with a platform to showcase their ventures to the broader startup ecosystem. I2N's broader achievements are significant, having supported 188 startups and small businesses that collectively raised over $62.7 million in capital and created 280 jobs by December 2025. Since 2019, the programs have contributed to raising over $63.2 million in capital and creating more than 279 jobs. In 2024, I2N won the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Activators of the Year at the Asia Pacific Triple E Awards, and its Director of Entrepreneurship, Siobhan Curran, received the Entrepreneurial Leader of the Year Award and the People's Choice award in 2023.
Leadership within the I2N includes Siobhan Curran as Director, Entrepreneurship, overseeing the strategic direction of its impactful programs. The Healthtech stream specifically leverages partnerships with entities like the Central Coast Health & Wellbeing Living Lab and receives intellectual property and trademark support from Davies Collison Cave. These collaborations ensure that founders in the Healthtech Accelerator receive specialised mentorship, industry connections, clinical validation pathways, and regulatory guidance, all aimed at fostering high-impact, sustainable global businesses within the health sector.
