Write a ReviewAbout I2N Accelerator (Cleantech)
The I2N Accelerator (Cleantech), an integral part of the University of Newcastle's Integrated Innovation Network (I2N), empowers tech-enabled entrepreneurs in the Hunter and Central Coast regions of Australia. Established in 2016, the I2N has dedicated nearly a decade to fostering a vibrant ecosystem for startups, evolving into Australia's most recommended regional Accelerator program according to Startup Muster 2024/2025. This accelerator specifically targets ventures addressing critical challenges in clean energy, clean water, recycling and waste, supply chain, built environment, air quality, and transportation.
The program is designed for early-stage founders, from pre-startup to pre-Series A funding, who are developing innovative, new-to-market products or services. It is open to all founders, irrespective of their affiliation with the University of Newcastle, provided their venture is headquartered in the specified regions. Over 13 intensive weeks, participants gain hands-on experience through expert workshops, weekly coaching from an Entrepreneur in Residence, and dedicated mentoring from industry specialists.
What truly differentiates the I2N Accelerator is its robust support system and a commitment to founder success. The program offers deep expertise and unparalleled access to dedicated program partners, including the Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) and intellectual property firm Davies Collison Cave, which provides initial IP and trademark support. Cleantech founders, in particular, can access TRaCE networks and potentially apply for the $1.7 million Early-Stage Seed Fund, designed to bridge the 'Valley of Death' for technologies moving from prototype to market. Crucially, the University of Newcastle makes no claim over the intellectual property generated by participants, allowing founders full ownership of their innovations.
Under the leadership of individuals such as Richard Barry, Manager of Startup Programs, and Siobhan Curran, Director of Entrepreneurship, the I2N Accelerator has achieved significant milestones. As of December 2025, the broader I2N programs have accelerated and incubated 188 teams, helping them raise over $62.7 million in capital and create 280 jobs. This dedication to fostering economic diversification and sustainable opportunities has cemented I2N's reputation, including winning the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Activators of the Year at the Asia Pacific Triple E Awards in 2024.
