Story Bank
Collect, organise, and deploy your personal stories. The most underrated leadership skill.
What it is
A Story Bank is a curated collection of your personal stories, organised by theme, and ready to deploy in conversations, presentations, and writing. Great communicators don’t make things up on the spot - they draw from a well of stories they’ve already reflected on, refined, and practised.
💡Why it matters
Stories are the most powerful communication tool humans have. Data persuades the mind, but stories move the heart. The problem is that most people have incredible stories locked inside them but can never access them at the right moment. You think of the perfect example an hour after the meeting. A Story Bank solves this by making your stories retrievable.
🛠️How to use it
Start a document or note with categories: Failure, Risk, Leadership, Vulnerability, Growth, Humour, Origin Story. Over the next month, add stories from your life under each category. Each entry should have a one-line summary, the story itself in two to three paragraphs, and the lesson it makes. When you’re preparing for a talk, a tough conversation, or a piece of writing, browse your bank first. You’ll be amazed how often the right story is already there.
💬My experience with it
I started building my Story Bank after I realised I was telling the same three stories in every talk. I had hundreds of experiences but only a handful were “top of mind.” By cataloguing them, I discovered stories I’d completely forgotten - moments of failure, serendipity, and growth that were far more interesting than my default anecdotes. My speaking improved dramatically once I could pull the right story for the right moment instead of defaulting to whatever was most recent.
🚀Try this today
Open a new note and write down five stories from your life - moments that taught you something, made you laugh, or changed your direction. For each one, write a one-line summary and tag it with a theme (failure, risk, growth, etc.). You’ve just started your Story Bank. Add to it whenever something interesting happens.
